"Yes, now, please..." Mabel's swallowed quietly, "please... give me the phone."

You handed it to her and quickly, Mabel opened the camera. She held your phone at bird's eye, leaving her identity hidden since all you could see was the top of her head. You, however, were recognizable for obvious reasons. "Ready?"

"Yeah.." you exhaled.

Mabel's eyes shut as she slowly closed the space separating you. Your pupils darted all over her face, breathing intensifying by the second as she got closer. With less than an inch from contact, your breath hitched.

The camera clicked and immediately after, she closed the gap, certainly not keeping her word about pretending.

Though you were confused, her lips were too soft, the kiss was too sweet and far too passionate to stop and ask questions.

Eventually, your phone dropped to the floor along side your integrity, professionalism, and clothes...

"Whoa," you came forth swatting your hands, "Wait, what's that night got to do with you being late?"

"Is that not what you wanted to talk about?" She furrowed her brows, eyes still shut. Irritation was seeping.

"No?" You laughed unconvincingly.

"You're going to upset me."

"For wanting to know the real reason you were late?"

"We already confirmed that you know it's because my boyfriend is back on land." Mabel glared at you. "Now, please, have the real conversation."

Defeated though your mouth wouldn't admit it. You exhaled and looked off. "I... I'm just confused. It doesn't feel like that night didn't mean anything to you. I mean... you ignore my texts and calls until you can't...like today's session for example. Then you pop up late offering me food completely washing over everything..."

"You think me avoiding a conversation means I have feelings?"

"I mean why else wouldn't you talk about it?"

"Because it doesn't matter."

Your eyes trailed her, reading again for sincerity. Unlike earlier, Mabel kept a straight face. There wasn't anything to indicate a lie, but you couldn't ignore how it felt.

"You don't actually feel that way." You spoke as it was fact.

"What makes you sure?"

"Are you listening? —"

"Not really." Mabel swiftly rebutted.

"— You're trying too hard to avoid the conversation —"

"We're having it right now."

"Yeah, and you're not being honest."

"I am being honest. You don't like what I'm saying."

"BECAUSE IT'S NOT TRUE —," you clenched your jaw, having spotted Mrs. Cummings passing by. You didn't want to be loud nor draw attention. "If you don't, or didn't, whatever, feel anything, why did you kiss me? Go all the way? Why didn't you stop at the picture?"

Mabel took another bite. Through chews, she answered, "I got caught in the heat of the moment..., we both did."

Your lip twitched. You were unsure how to respond because it was true for you, but there's no way... no way it was true for her. "You initiated everything that night, Mabel."

Her pupils were diluted as if she was staring at something she despised. "And you're too convinced it meant something. I was genuinely trying to help but things got heated."

You blinked in disbelief as Mabel picked some crumbs out of teeth with her tongue. She was the most nonchalant you'd ever seen her. "Still think I'm lying, don't you?"

Instead of answering, you slid the chair back, standing and immediately stuffing your laptop and spiral in your book bag.

"Whoa, where are you going?"

With steam practically coming from your skull, you slung your back onto your shoulder, not wasting a second to put distance between her and yourself.

"Hello?!" Mabel tracked your movement until you were out of sight. She got frustrated recalling the entire interaction. Her words, your words, everything. It sent her into a spiral.

A thousand questions, but some of the biggest were if what you accused her of was real: did she have feelings for you? Prior to that night? After?

She did go to big lengths to spare your feelings: to cushion them, but that's also because she didn't want to talk about it. Or maybe she wasn't ready. Maybe she wanted to forget about it. She had a good reason too.

Mabel glanced at her phone, tapping the screen.

She had a really good reason, too.

But still, what the f*ck?
