Is Bangladeshi education system good? ›

Bangladesh's education system continues to be of poor quality. The educational system and standards fall short when compared with the standards in other countries; in another way, they lag. Since Bangladesh's independence, a lack of a uniform curriculum has been a major problem in the education sector.

The country has been recovering from poverty but the campaign “education for all” is under many challenges, including education inequality, unemployment, childhood marriage, and shortage of education materials.

Curriculum. Although some madrasas teach secular subjects, in general madrasas offer a religious-based curriculum, focusing on the Quran and Islamic texts.

As per Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (BANBEIS), as of 2015, a total of 9,319 Alia madrasas were operating in the country, with a total of 2,409,373 students.

The country ranked 19th out of 24 countries with medium human development, and performed the worst in the higher education sector. Bangladesh ranked 112th out of 138 countries in the Global Knowledge Index 2020, indicating the country's weak performance in terms of knowledge infrastructure.

Establishment of more universities in science and technology fields, more planetariums, libraries, laboratories, and scientific equipment. Establish multi-media classrooms (MMC) across all primary and secondary schools. Introduce ICT courses in all post-graduate colleges of Bangladesh.

The functional literacy rate (7+above years) in Bangladesh is now 62.92% whereas the general literacy rate in the country is 74.23%. The functional literacy rate among people aged between 11-45 years in the country is however, 73.69% in 2023 which was 53.70% in 2011.

In Bangladesh, although primary education is free and the government provides the textbooks, more than 4.3 million children aged 6-15 years are not in school and around 42 million people – about 26 percent of the population – are still illiterate.
