Fight Club fans stunned after noticing Tyler 'flash' early in film which gives away entire plot twist (2024)

We all know that the first rule of Fight Club is that you do not talk about Fight Club.

But when you realise that the cult classic was littered with Easter eggs - like the one prop that features in nearly every scene - how can you not discuss it?

As film fans will already be well aware, the 1999 smash hit starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt follows the journey of an unnamed white-collar worker suffering from insomnia who strikes up a friendship with a care-free soap salesman.

Known only as The Narrator, Norton's character is pretty much in a constant state of sleeplessness and he isn't exactly chuffed with how the rest of his life is going either.

After 'meeting' Tyler Durden (Pitt), he becomes close with the dodgy salesman and the pair decide to set up an underground fight club/soap-making scheme, while viewers watch them both become increasingly unhinged.

Things start to get seriously out of control when Tyler recruits more members for Fight Club, as it turns into an army of anarchists who rebrand as 'Project Mayhem', while causing chaos on the streets in a bid to disrupt social order.

By this point, The Narrator is losing the will to live with his weird pal.

Beware, as spoilers do follow.

After Tyler goes AWOL again, Project Mayhem reaches a new height of popularity and his love interest Marla Singer refers to him by his business partner's name, the penny finally drops for The Narrator.

Much to his horror, he realises that the eccentric soap salesman is actually part of his split personality.

By day, he's a depressed employee at an automobile company, but at night he is moonlighting as the chaotic and charismatic Tyler during bouts of insomnia.

I told you it was an epic plot twist!

It certainly came as a shock to the majority of viewers the first time they sat and watched Fight Club, but it turns out the writing was on the wall all along.

While a lot of people concentrate on the final 30 minutes of the film where we find out that Tyler was merely a figment of The Narrator's imagination, movie lovers ought to be looking at the earlier scenes instead.

That's because there are at least four blink-and-you-miss-it moments where Tyler turns up which are clues that the soap salesman is The Narrator's alter ego.

By the photocopier

Minutes into the movie, The Narrator is stood next to a photocopier at work while explaining that 'with insomnia, nothing is real' - and as he is staring into space, Tyler appears on screen for a mere second.

Viewers reckon this signifies the moment when Norton's character really loses his grip on reality and Tyler is born.

At the hospital

Following that, another scene shows The Narrator pleading with his doctor for sleeping pills in the corridor of a hospital, only for Tyler to suddenly flash before his eyes.

At the support group

It happens again the first time The Narrator joins a support group for men with testicular cancer, as when he is watching an attendee pour their heart out, Tyler briefly appears behind them.

On the street

Following that, The Narrator walks out onto the street and glances at a woman wearing high-heels trotting off into the night - only for Tyler again to show up again for a quick second.

People can't believe they missed the incredible Easter eggs hidden in the first half of Fight Club, which were included to mark various phases of The Narrator's descent into madness.

Hi, Brad (20th Century Fox)

One viewer said: "It took me over 6 times watching this movie to catch the one during testicular cancer.

"I love this aspect to the movie. Its a good visual representation of a second personality worming its way into The Narrator's mind."

Another wrote: "I had to search this up because I thought I was just bugging out!"

A third added: "I've seen this movie like 20 times and read the book a good 10. I only just noticed these ones tonight somehow and I've noticed all of them so far. I was aware of the p*rn inserts before, but never these...wow."

A fourth laughed: "Ha! So I wasn’t just going crazy!"

While a fifth chimed in: "It wasn't until the second time I watched the movie that I finally understood why he kept flashing on screen."
